PHY WEB: Resolution

PHY WEB: Resolution
This webinar covers a description of spatial resolution including axial and lateral components, contrast resolution and temporal resolution. The description includes how beam factors and other system components affect resolution and methods that can be applied to improve these resolutions.

Welcome to ASUM’s Physical Principles of Ultrasound Webinar Series ideal for all medical trainees and practitioners who use ultrasound.

Whether you qualified recently, some time ago or or still in the learning phase, you are sure to learn from our specialist presenters, whether physicist or practitioners. They will make the Physical Principles of Ultrasound so much simpler to understand and possibly even fun!

Join Brian Starkoff, Martin Necas, Dr Rob Gill and Adam Lunghi over 11 fortnightly webinars as they delve into the principles and fundamentals of Ultrasound Physics.

This is the 3rd webinar in the series:
This webinar covers a description of spatial resolution including axial and lateral components, contrast resolution and temporal resolution. The description includes how beam factors and other system components affect resolution and methods that can be applied to improve these resolutions.

Key learnings and outcomes:
-    An understanding of spatial resolution and how beam geometry will limit the axial and lateral resolution that can be achieved with the machine.
-    Knowledge of how other ultrasound system components can affect both axial and lateral resolution.
-    An understanding of the nature of contrast resolution and how contrast resolution affects the quality of an ultrasound image.
-    An understanding of the importance of temporal resolution in imaging rapidly moving structures and the relationship of temporal resolution to frame rate.
-    Gain knowledge of various methods that can be applied to improve the spatial, contrast and temporal resolution during an ultrasound examination.

This course does not meet the requirements for any RPL for the DMU, CCPU, CAHPU or DDU.

It covers the theoretical curriculum for Physics. Ultrasonic imaging provides impressively detailed images of gross anatomy and pathology. The high quality of these images can lead to overconfidence in interpretation of the images in a clinical setting. In practice, all ultrasound images are distorted to some extent and are subject to artifact. While not always materially detracting from the image, it is essential to recognise the presence of artifacts and minimise their effects in order to draw appropriate clinical conclusions from ultrasound images. This is of particular significance in studies involving accurate measurement (for example, estimating tumour growth) and where accurate localisation of a structure is required. As most artifacts must be dealt with by the user at the time of the ultrasound examination, the importance of understanding the imaging process and its limitations has led to the inclusion of a compulsory ‘physics’ component in all qualifications issued by ASUM.
