Dr Hannah Latta is a Critical Care Paramedic with Wellington Free Ambulance and an ultrasound educator working across prehospital and emergency department settings. Hannah holds a Doctor of Health Science from Auckland University of Technology (AUT), where her research focused on paramedic-led echocardiography in pulseless electrical activity cardiac arrest. Hannah contributes to postgraduate paramedic education at AUT and is involved in the development of point-of-care ultrasound training for clinicians. Her work focuses on the integration of ultrasound into time-critical decision-making, particularly in austere and prehospital environments.
Webinar Description
This webinar explores the use of point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) in austere prehospital environments, including road and aeromedical settings. It focuses on how ultrasound supports time-critical decision-making under conditions of uncertainty, limited resources, and environmental constraints. Real-world cases will highlight both the clinical impact and the limitations of POCUS at the edge of care.
Marketing Overview and Learning Outcomes
This session examines how prehospital clinicians integrate ultrasound into real-world practice across austere environments.
Moving beyond image acquisition, it explores how POCUS informs clinical reasoning, transport decisions, and risk management in time-critical scenarios. The session will also address the practical limitations and cognitive challenges of ultrasound use outside the hospital setting.
By the end of this webinar, participants will be able to:
- Describe the role of POCUS in austere prehospital environments
- identify clinical scenarios where ultrasound may alter decision-making,
- recognise the limitations and risks of POCUS in resource-constrained settings,
- apply a decision-focused approach to ultrasound use in practice,
- and reflect on how POCUS can support transport and treatment decisions.
